Department of Veterans Affairs Improves Patient Care
MPC Computers and Sentillion Implement Solution
THE SITUATION
The Department of Veterans Affairs is one of the largest healthcare providers in the world. Nationwide,
the VA operates 163 hospitals and more than 850 ambulatory care and outpatient clinics, in addition
to 137 nursing homes, 43 domiciliaries and 73 comprehensive home-care programs. Last year, more
than 4.5 million people received care in VA health care facilities, and VA outpatient clinics registered
approximately 46.5 million visits. The number of patients treated increased by over 9.5 percent from
2001 to 2002.
Sentillion's Vergence Context Management solution was utilized for this new architecture, making it a
part of the core Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) used by every VA facility. Sentillion chose
to partner with MPC Computers to manage the $10.2M effort under the Procurement of Computer
Hardware and Software-2 (PCHS2) contract.
THE SOLUTION
Sentillion provides technology solutions that enable healthcare information systems to work together
consistently, intuitively and securely. The company's Vergence product suite provides solutions for
secure authentication, single sign-on, context management and privacy management.
With Vergence Context Manager, applications are automatically synchronized around the same clinical
context-such as a particular patient or clinical observation. For example, if a physician is reviewing
patient records in an administrative application, Context Manager automatically tunes the dictation system, physician order entry, PACS application, etc. to that same patient. It is enterprise-wide
software that operates "in the background" and links patient data and user ids and passwords across
all associated applications. By synchronizing multiple applications, Vergence saves caregivers
time, minimizes the chance for medical errors, ensures patient confidentiality, facilitates HIPAA
compliance and enhances patient safety. Additionally, the overall quality of care is improved as
all patient records via Vergence-aware applications are recorded in a central audit database for easy
analysis and reporting.
MPC Computers provides government customers with full computing solutions through a multi-tude
of software and hardware vendor relationships. A prime contractor on the VA's PCHS2
contract, MPC has a long-term, proven history of successfully serving the VA since 1997.
MPC'S ROLE
Sentillion chose to partner with MPC to bring this solution to the VA for multiple reasons. Not only
did Sentillion believe MPC provided the best value for the VA, they also felt MPC's in-depth knowledge
of and experience with VA requirements was a strong benefit. Additionally, Sentillion was impressed
by MPC's track record of service and support and its flexibility in allowing Sentillion to work with
multiple partners.
Not only did MPC meet Sentillion's requirements, it provided additional value above and beyond what
Sentillion had expected. MPC's role extended beyond the contract vehicle and general relationship to
include both project management and contract assistance. "The level of experience and responsiveness
from MPC's staff was impressive," said Maggie Copeland, Sentillion's director of federal systems.
"In addition to the existing account management relationship, MPC took the extra step of assigning
a specific contract specialist and project manager to ensure the project's success."
MPC's project manager handled all the logistics and details of the program including billing, shipping
schedules, weekly status calls, setting up training, overall communication, problem resolution and more.
"It was invaluable to have one point of contact both for us and the VA in regards to problem resolution
and assurance of overall satisfaction," said Copeland. "After my positive experience with MPC I would
definitely consider partnering with them again on future projects."
STATUS AND RESULTS
Currently three Alpha sites are in the process of full installation and training. Once implementation
is completed at these sites, the VA will roll out the solution to their 163 medical centers and six region-al
offices. The implementation of the Context Management tool is expected to improve ease of use,
decrease time managing patient records, enhance patient security and increase the overall quality of
care.
This Sentillion solution is just one example of how MPC Computers continually works with various hard-ware
and software partners to supply the VA with a complete IT solution. MPC utilizes their multiple
vendor partnerships, coupled with their in-depth understanding of the VA's specific requirements to
not only meet but to exceed customer expectations.
